Asia-Pacific: Canada’s expertise can fill labour niche in Asia

Canada could help developing countries in South and Southeast Asia with a problem common to modernizing economics: a shortage of skilled labour. That was one of the more interesting points in a report last week from the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada calling on Ottawa to develop a comprehensive Asia strategy. Mostly, the Vancouver think-thank’s report holds few surprises. It calls for ratifying the Trans-Pacific Partnership, expediting trade deals with China and Japan, greater political engagement from Ottawa in Asian affairs, and regular conferences with provincial and municipal governments, non-governmental organizations and researchers on engaging the Asia-Pacific.
